XP Pro SP1 Prob with NIC disappearing

As the title says..

Randomly user cant logon to network and in device manager the NIC has disappeared.

Tried reinstalling but no joy.

Anyone seens this ?

If it's built into the motherboard try updating the BIOS or checking the motherboard from earth faults near the NIC port.

If it's a separate board then try changing the PCI slot its installed in.

You might also want to check through the computers IRQ/DMA etc resources and see what the NIC is sharing resources with, if it's something like a sound card then try disabling it and see if it improves stability.

The other alternative would be to boot off a linux CD (Knoppix etc) and see how the network behaves itself then

Thought of that but put in a SP1 hard disk from identical pc and worked fine.

Strange thing is put the old drive back in and now that is working !

Very odd.
