So I bought Windows XP Professional not that long ago, about 5 months, which cost a fair bit of money, and now I'm wondering... Can I upgrade to Vista at a reduced charge because I have this legitimate copy of XP Pro, or am I going to have to pay out big time to get the now latest OS?

You wont get a reduced price, the cheapest you will get is the OEM version

You need to purchase an Upgrade copy of Vista. This will save you some money over the cost of a full copy of Vista.

Well some would say that the Upgrade version is dicounted for this exact reason.

I take it you own the Full Packaged Product version (Retail)?

In which case, buy the Upgrade version rather than OEM to avoid all the motherboard replacement issues.

Bursny what would u recommend to me mate! Well i am more than sure that i will purchase Vista Home edition ,just not sure which one! i got atm original Windows XP Home edition, will i will be able to upgrate it to Vista Home Edition? And how this upgrate or instalation works! I have to reformat every time,or will i ll be able to install it just on my XP Home edition? if i buy Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade Edition DVD (Includes 32-bit DVD and info on obtaining 64-bit DVD) - Retail (66G-00017) And i wil be able to activate how meny times i like, and another mobo bonus? only 82 quid, not bad !

If you already have a ful copy of XP, just get the vista upgrade. Substantialy cheaper and doesn't have all the restriction in place with the Vista OEM SKU.

Of course if you choose this route your XP licence becomes defunct and can only be used as a stepping stone to vista as essentialy the price of vista for you is XP + Vista Upgrade.

So you can't then go and reuse that XP key elsewhere. If this is acceptable to you I'd go that route.

It's what I did, I got vista buisness upgrade through work and then paid for anytime upgrade to ultimate.

It does make the install somewhat convoluted as I have to install XP, patch to sp2, install vista buisness, activate it, then run the anytime upgrade to do antother upgrade install and finaly I hav Vista Ultimate.

Right, I'd reccommend you get a Vista HP OEM licence.

The main reason being is that you're still locked to the motherboard as you're upgrading an OEM licence, So you may as well go for the cheaper option of a new OEM licence.

IMO, Upgrades are only worth it if you have a full retail licence..

There are restrictions with an OEM licence however and if you do a lot of motherboard upgrades spend the money on a full retail edition.

For more info, do a search ;)

The XP licence is not defunct per se. You can't use it on another machine but if you have two copies of XP, you can transfer the upgrade and then go back to using XP.

I know what you're getting at though.

If you have a 64 bit platform most people recommend Vista 64, but there are lengthy threads on the pros and cons.
