Hope someone can answer this for me.

I have set-up Remote Desktop on an XP Pro Laptop of my friend's.

I was under the impression that you can use Remote Desktop while someone else is logged on with a different username.

Or is this only achievable with Server 2003?

Thanks in advance ;)

That's only acheiveable with terminal services... so on an xp machine - no - you can only have 1 person logged in at a time.

terminal services you can have on server operating systems... by default a server OS comes with 2 terminal server licenses (meaning 2 people can be logged on at a time) otherwise you can buy more licenses to have more people logged in simultaneously.

They're designed for sys admins though, not normal users.

There are some documents out there entailing how to enable this in windows, don't know about their legality though.

I do seem to remember you being able to download Terminal Services for Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 from MS. But I could be imagining things again.

Well... terminal services is actually designed for the end user... ie multiple clients all working on the same server in order to maintain the integrity of a database... or something similar.

Only the admin side is designed for the sys admins :P

I think what he means is that the ones that come with the server editions without paying extra are for admin purposes.

As for XP, never run RDC into it, only from it to an S2K3 box.

Ah - fair enough.

I use RDP to my xp machine when away from home and tight VNC for remoting to various machines within the house.
