Messd up Windows, was scanning for viruses, got loads then instead of moving to vault I instructed the scanner to delete them. Then realised all the viruses were from windows/system32. Now my PC won't start, it restarts everytime it get past the loading screen. Can't start in safe mode/last good configuration either. Tried Windows repair, still won't work.

Don't want to reinstall Windows, any advice?

Yeah I've seen this happen a few times which is why it is often quicker and easier to reinstall rather than trying to remove. Is a reinstall an option or do you have files to recover first?

what av did you use?

just need to recover my photos, about 10gigs of them, and some other files in my documents. so I did (re)installed xp on a separate hard drive(e:/) in hoping i could recover my photos, but when i went to the folder c:/documents and settings/(my name) it says "access denied" FML. how can i get my photos/files back.

May need to enable Security tab first.

Tools>Folder Options>View tab scroll to uncheck 'Use simple file sharing'

Then right click folder>Properties>Security Tab>Advanced>click on Owner tab and set yourself as the owner of the folder. XP will then adjust file permission appropriately. :) This is from memory but should do the job.
