xp problems

so i got his old pc for my lil bro its win xp sp3. The problem is it is not finding the cd drive i have checked all of the cables, drives and even tried another drive but none of the drives are being recognised.

Does linux pick up the drive?
does it appear in device manager?
is the drive powered
ide or sata?

Did the cd drive come with the pc?

If it appears in device manager try uninstalling it then rebooting and see if it reinstalls it.

Seen this before with old xp installs....good excuse for a fresh install

yeah uninstall in device manager and restart, I had that before

1) cant boot linux
2) it does appear in device manager
3) yes
4) ide

i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling still not working. the drive is maxtor 6e040l0

thats a hard drive , maxtor don't make cd drives.

try changing the jumper on the back of the cd drive to cable select.
