xp repair

some background info...the reason I wanted to do a repair was that xp was taking ages to boot up......it went from the post screen to the xp screen really quickly, but then it would take ages to go from the xp screen to the log on screen then ages again from the log on screen to the desktop.
I have only got 26 processes starting so am unsure what could be causing the delay.

I have done anti wirus scans mallware scans spyware.
need some fresh input....

many thanks

If you want to perform a repair of Windows XP and can boot into Windows, do so and insert the CD, when the options menu appears select "upgrade" and follow the on-screen prompts.

If your machine is in a state whereby you cannot boot too Windows, insert the CD, power on your PC and boot from the Windows CD-ROM after it has finished loading files needed to runs the Windows setup program youll be given three options, first one being "Install Windows Now" youll also see an option to repair Windows (Do not select this)

Select that option and the setup program will try to locate an existing version of Windows installed on your PC if it does the following screen will give you the option to repair (Select this option) it will then take you through an upgrade of your existing installation without losing data, programs or profile information currently stored on the disk.

If setup doesnt detect an OS then im affraid youll have to seek further advice

From your second post though it doesnt appear to be a problem with Windows but with the applications loading at startup, i imagine theres either a lot of them or you have further issues to deal with.

Try booting to Windows and running "MSconfig" from the command prompt, on the first screen select "selective startup" then uncheck "load startup items" reboot and see what happens.

HDD is a new one andcheck disc is fine and there are no probs with sectors....have turned everytrhing off in msconfig (external programs...hence the 26 processes). still got the same problem....
thanks for the input guys

try booting is safe mode, and see if it still takes theat amount of time, if it does, you will get to see what file it is taking its time on in the startup log.

If its quicker then its a driver issue , or at least somethng it needs to load on startup.

create another user account and see if its quicker with that account, if it is then its down to something in your user settings etc.

try and narrow it down like that.

maybe its trying to establish a network connection., mapped any drives ? often windows will shut down and start up slower if it cant find a network connection .

try bootvis?

isnt that defeating the object??
I need to know what is causing the problem......
It is doing my head in

No, Bootvis is used to see any delays when a system boots and let you then use the information to cure the delay.

Doing a repair install usually isn't the best idea as its like patching your cars engine up with sticky tape or chewing gum, a temporary fix but will most certainly cause problems later on. You're better spending a day or 2 gathering all the programs you have on your comp and backup any data onto a disk then just fresh installing. Repair install is usually the root to problems.

If you have in the past networked and have mapped drives/folders then in my computer it should show up as 'network drives ' .

To disable, just right click the network drive and click ' disconnect' .

bootlogging is a standard option when you want to go into safe mode, the option will be there along side 'safe mode' in the f8 menu.

it will create a txt file on your c: root of the log inwhich you can analyse and try to ween out the offending process .

but as i said in above post, create a different user account and see if your problem is still the same, if not , that would rule out a hardware issue as it would be dependant on user settings/installed applications.

right first of all thanks for all the help.
I havent created a new user as the main problem is before the select user page now.
The Pc is now stable and the only problem is the boot up from the post page to the user logon....it takes ages well over 2mins.That has been cut down from 3mins17secs though thanks to the advice recieved. That is still 1min 2 secs longer than my other machine(which runs on 37 prosesses whilst the problem machine runs of 26!!!).I have got a copy of my bootlog and there is loads of not loaded on.it is to long to put on.
Any advice like how to remove drivers that I dont need etc or how to cut what loads up (done the mconfig) so I can reduce the start up load .

Sorry to hijack the thread, but with the XP repair.. Does it actually re-create SID's? So, like I could take an hdd from one computer and use it in another with totally different hardware, without having to actually format.

Sorry for the nooby question.

SIDs are totally dynamic and have been since Win 2000.
