OK, I've got XP with Service pack 2 with automatic updates on, so I'm assuming XP was pretty much up to date, anyway I was just prompted to install Service pack 3 (66 MB) and it got about halfway through and stalled during some sort finishing stage (sorry can't remember what it said) I've got a decent spec machine that is working perfectly AFAIK and the only other thing on there that I can think of that could be causing a conflict is Zonealarm.

Anyone got any suggestions? I had to let Windows roll back the update/reboot twice/uninstall, etc, etc, which I'd rather not have to do if possible...

Blimey, I hope I'm not going to have to do a full reinstall of XP, I've just downloaded the standalone version of SP3, so I might try disconnecting my modem, turning the firewall off and installing that instead, unless anyone else has any better ideas.
