XP shutdown via a UPS

I have been tiding our server racks at work for the past few days. I've got all our servers connected to our main UPS and setup to shutdown after 5 mins of battery power which I will test this saturday morning. The main UPS is set so that it will not automatically switch back on but the network card is still powered so that we can remote in and turn it back on.

All other equipment is running of an APC2200 UPS inclusing switches, phone system and cisco routers and a voicemail pc as part of the phone system and it runs on XP. This UPS is set to automatically switch on so that the routers and switches switch on and we can get comms to the main ups.

I want to enable the voicemail PC (Win XP) to switch on when the APC2200 UPS switches on. It will be running powerchtue software to enable it to switch off but I need to set up a few things to enable this: -

1) I need to enable in the BIOS a way that the PC will remember it's last power state, i.e. if the pc was switched on it will start the PC when power returns.

2) I also need to make XP shutdown in the old fassion way where it says "It is safe to switch this computer off now" and doesn't automatically switch. This will make the BIOS think the PC was switched on before the power was lost and switch on the PC when the APC2200 switches back on.

I don't want the PC to switch on everytime power is pluged in as you could never plug the PC in without it switching on. This is why I want it to remember it's last power state.

The PC is a Dell but not on site atm so can't get the model number atm.

Any ideas where to look in the BIOS to enable number 1 and how can I get XP to do Number 2 :P

Thanks

Most bios give you 3 options after power is resumed. off, last state or on. The latter you can use which will mean you don't have to mess about with 'it is now safe to turn off your computer'.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to do this in a server environment? I can't imagine you needing to unplug the server and plug it back in much.

In order to do what you want you'd have to mess about with the APM settings which might require a reinstall, but i'm not sure about that.

I would like to set it up so it doesn't boot every time the power is plugged in, anyone know how to change the way XP closes down.

Thanks

I didn't ignore your post, you answered No.1 perfectly but my boss doesn't want the pc to switch on everytime it's plugged in.

I think I also misunderstood what my boss ment in that the powerchute software is what causes the pc to shutdown in the fashion described in No.2 but when they tried it on windows smb it didn't work like that so I'll just have to see what happens saturday. If it doesn't then I can always set it up how you described.

Thanks for the help, much appricieated
