xp slow/hang on shutdown

any tips on finding out what is stalling the shutdown process? any tools that log stuff?

Have you looked through Event Viewer?

Are there any errors when the machine is shutting down? Check both System and App section of the Logs.

If there is nothing there, then look go through your MSCONFIG and disable any thrid party services and then shutdown your machine see if that works.

I had the same sort of problem when i was using XP, i installed the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service" from Microsoft and that sorted it, link below.

thanks for the tips ,couldnt see anything of interest and have most services already disabled/manual so tried the other post and it seems to have sorted it
