It's taking about 8 or 9 sweeps of the loading bar before XP ends up at the login screen, I have defragged the system drive and disabled any unecessary startup programs, I have tried to run bootvis to get an idea of what is going on but it doesn't capture anything and I just end up with a blank chart.

Anyone any ideas?

How much hardware do you have plugged in? ie expansion cards etc.

At every startup XP wil scan all hardware looking for changes to the previous boot to record in the hardware profiles.

So the more hardware/peripherals you have the longer the boot process.

There are many reasons why XP may be slow to boot, ^ is the only one I can think of after defragging, and disabling all unimportant programs from starting up.

If you have a duel/quad core, Im not sure if this makes a difference, but start>run>msconfig>boot>advanced boot options>number of processors select two/four :)

Noticed this too when I had lots of USB devices plugged in to my PC when I was running XP. Though a reinstall of XP often speeds up the process. Perhaps removing any old drivers from the system could help. I'm not sure, maybe someone can confirm that?

I've tried removing ghost devices under Device Manager but that hasn't improved things at all.

Think my netbook has made me notice it more on the desktop, the netbook only takes like 3 and half sweeps before the loading screen goes off.

Is your optical drive in good working order? My dvd-rw recently conked out on me and when I plug it in windows takes an age to boot.

Optical drive seems to be working fine, I've just used it recently to install software.

I've done HD Tach's on all my HDD's too and they're all performing normally.

run crap cleaner...see if that helps
normally there is loads of crap left over in the registry even after uninstalling apps

You could also try Driverheaven TuneXP Which has some good tweaks to help speed up boot times. See the Help documentation included to know what settings to use.

This may help, but it doesnt explain why you are suddenly getting the slower boot times.

The prefetch thing sorted it, it's down to 1 and a bit sweeps of the loading bar now.

Thanks :)
