Is there anyway to find out which version of XP I need from my cdkey. I've got an old laptop I'm about to sell.
So went to reinstall oem home, as I guessed it would be this version. However its saying the key is invalid.

All the sticker says is xp home.
I bought it second hand which is why I don't have the disk which came with it.

You might have to test it with different O/S's and see which it works with, if the sticker says it's Home. Home/retail should be fine.

Are they not different for OEM, Retail and corp?

Yes they are different. Try with Retail (if you can get your hands on one)

Some of the manufacturer ones are different. I tried that in order to get rid of the Fujitsu install when I had to format. Ended up formatting again to have to use the Fujitsu restore method :(

i have a similair problem only my cd key on laptop is windows xp pro +sp

do i contact compaq or do i contact microspft to get the media, and any idea at all how much it would be, thanks

the best way to find out for sure what type of 2000/xp/2003 you have is to do this...

start, run, eula.txt press enter

scroll to bottom, will say the type of cd used for the installation, google the code it gives you if its not clear what type it is
