XP -> Vista File sharing

Well I've got a problem with tranferring files TO vista from XP Home. I can access the shared folder on my vista machine ,but when I try to transfer a file over, it get an error saying the specified network name is no longer available.

I can transfer files to and from xp from within vista no problem, but the speed is rubbish. Any ideas before I go postal?

EDIT: A few more details. The machines are connected with Cat5 via a netgear dg834 router. Both machines are on the same workgroup.

Tried pinging the XP machine from vista and see if you get any packet loss, that might explain the crap speed.
