Im sure that im not the firs, nor will be the last to ask this question, but hey we've all been here. I'm on vista at the moment on IDe harddrives so as you can imagine its rather slow. I'm going to upgrade to a Sata hard drive but i'm wandering what OS to go for. I primarily use my system for gaming, which i would have thought would mean vista or windows 7, but the distinct lack of dx10 games makes me think otherwise... what do you guys think?.. Is Xp still champ or is windows 7 the way?

Well I was using Vista Home Premium that I considered to be considerably better than XP for everything, however I then tried the 7100 RC release of Windows 7. After a few weeks of dual booting, I've now replaced Vista with W7! Sure its a release candidate but so far it has thrown everything I've wanted to play at it without fault and actually seems a little faster in all the benchmarks I've ran.

Until I come across a problem, I think I will be staying with W7 now!

win7 over xp unless you're running quite an old (slow) system. Or unless you don't want to have to reinstall in a year's time when the beta version expires.
And, IDE HDDs aren't inherently slower than SATA ones. The reduced bandwidth does not limit the speed of the hard drive, it's just that older (and therefore slower) HDDs are more likely to use the IDE interface over the newer SATA one.

hmm my hard drives atm is 2x seagate st3200826, if that helps.. ( il have a look at the specs)

Edit- Hmm i cant find much information except for the fact that the hard drives have a lot of problems with data recovery, which may mean it would be wise to switch hard drives now...

Assessing whether a computer will run XP better than 7 depends on the other parts of the system much more than the HDD. RAM? CPU? Graphics? :p

ahh ok thanks.. i'l possibly have a go at that soon.. Also i'm quite curious what does your system run like/run for?.. (does 8gb have that much advantage over 4gb?)?

Asus P5q pro mobo
e2180@ 2.8, tho could go higher
4gb 5300 ram (yes i know its slow ram)
4850 512mb

That would cope with either of the 3 oses just fine. If you already have an xp license then use that, otherwise if you are comfortable with reinstalling windows again at a later date along with all your programs, get the Win7RC. If not get Windows Vista Home Premium. With both win7 and Vista, get the 64 bit version as then you can access all 4GB of your memory.

I running Windows 7 RC1 (was using Beta as well) as my main OS from XP - I have Vista on another machine and found it to be very heavy, but everyone I have spoken to agrees with me that they've got it right with Windows 7 - it works very nicely, is quick and seems to run everything that used to run! I'm using the 64 bit version on a machine that I built 4 years ago - I even wiped a Macbook and put it on there and ran really nicely. Plus you can download RC1 and run it for free until early next year :)

Hmm i've had a change of heart.. while im sure windows 7 is nice, i just cant do with un-installing it next year.. it'l be right before my final exams, and thats a nasty mistake waiting to happen.. So it's either vista or Xp?...
I have xp 86 and vista 64 licences.. so would the lack of ram capability on xp make vista more powerful?.. ( btw thanks for your help while i change my mind widly and unpredictably :P )

vista all the way. it will run fine. it runs perfectly fine on 2gb let alone 4gb. I found next to no difference in windows performance when I upgraded to 4gb.

Go Vista 64. Newest and stable and there will be plenty of support for it in a year, XP may well be running dwon by then.

Install XP and then install Win 7 x64, run that all the time, but if anything ever goes eerie you can always have xp in the background to boot into, too.

Windows 7 generally runs as fast as XP with the looks and intuition of Vista, perfect combination imho.
