is there much of a speed difference between the two?

xp has more optimised boot time, and is more stable

if explorer goes in 2k, a lot of the time, you just HAVE to restart

xpsp2 is awesome

XP with Service Pack 2 is the only Windows OS you should consider unless you have good reason to use an older version.

If Explorer goes anytime and it doesn't come back automatically then just load up Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and goto File->New Task then type in "explorer" and hit OK.

in XP they automated that little nugget and boasted 'increased reliability'
