I've installed a wireless network card for a friend. Her PC is running XP home SP3.
Initially I used a Netgear WPN111 USB dongle, but I found that it would see the Sky access point, would allow me to enter the encryption key, but at the point of picking up the IP address would disconnect. I tried setting a static IP, but it still connects and disconnects. Each time it is about 5 seconds of connection before the disconnect.

I have today tried a ne Belkin wireless card (PCI) but it still does the same.

It was running Norton Internet Security, which I though might cause a problem, so I have uninstalled it. This has not cured the problem.
I've killed of all unneccessary processes, disabled the firewall and even stopped Windows turning it off in the device power settings.
There are no applications or processes running that I cannot account for. There is nothing in the event viewer that corresponds with the disconnects.

Still it keeps bouncing.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing this, as I've never encountered it.

Cheers

{edit} forgot to mention that my laptop, phone and her Wii all connect without any issue.

I've seen a few Sky routers do this.

Disable all the security on the router and test again to see if you can get in OK - chances are you can.

Reset the security to WPA and enter a new passphrase.
Delete the connection on the laptop and let it find the wireless again.
Re-enter the WPA passphrase and all should be good.

Signal strength is great. It's about 4 foot from the router!

PistolPete, why would this affect only the Windows device and not the others?

Yes, tried that. Haven't tried disabling encryption yet, but can't see the logic in doing it.
