XP woes!

Friend of mine has given me his tower running XP Home Sp3.

It won't start saying missing or corrupt system (not a specific file).

I place my HP Home SP2 CD in the drive, boot from it, and go to the repair install option. It's not there.

I boot to recovery and chkdsk and bootcfg. I reboot from the CD and go to the repair installation, this time it's there. I repair the install.

I apply SP3, reboot, and now it says the version is not activated. I press OK to activate now, and the computer hangs (well not really, it just doesn't load the activation wizard, I assume because the file has been modified?).

I can open up the utility manager, but can't do anything more than try and click on the MS help (which is a link, and I would have though opened IE).

So, stuck!!! Rebooting from the CD now no longer has the repair option listed either. :(

Any ideas?

Boot into safe mode with command prompt, once the command prompt is up type 'explorer.exe'

Then using SP3 from a disc install it from safe mode, once it reboots you should then have a working activation screen.

Edit: If that doesn't work try uninstalling SP3 again.

Yeah, far from hookie, with a nice genuine cert stuck to the side of the case.

Anyhoo, got it working in a similar fashio. I booted to safe mode with command prompt. Insalled IE8, and rebooted. IE8 was all it needed to get the activation screen to pop up on restart. Solved

Thanks
