So i decided id go for a fresh install as its been a while since ive done one and thought it would clean my pc up a bit. So i load the xp setup and start the install. Its at 2% when i realise i havnt backed up my HDD, so i cancel the install and reboot, i get to the main XP screen then after that i get a blank scrren then the blue screen of death saying "bad image checksum" and something else saying "corrupt..." after this my pc reboots its self and the whole thing repeats its self. So what is the problem. I dont really want 2 do a fresh install without backing up.

a bit late in the day to think about backing up !

I would have thought ,once the disk is loading drivers and formatting the hard drive in NTFS [ it normally wants to do this] you'll not be able to go back to your original Windows setup .
What you could do is add the hard drive to another Pc and look for any folders etc . If you cannot see anything you may be able to run a recovery program to get things back.

Always best to make 2 partitions on your hd when you first set it up. One for xp and games other for stuff you may want to keep. Then when you do need to do a clean install you dont need to back anything up....just make sure you use the right partition.

Bit late for that advice i know but will help in the future.

How do you actually go about doing that?
Ive created new partitions before in the format/installation options (where you set up windows etc) yet when it comes to installing things on them it never works..

How exactly do you mean it doesnt work? You just create the partitions then format 1st one , install xp on it then once in xp format other partition and use as storage.
Then never keep anything important on the c patition so if it all goes pete tong one day unexpectantly u loose nothing of importance.

I would recommend attaching the drive into a 2nd computer and using recovery software to hopefully "backup" the data what is there. Something lack "getdataback" is quite good, but you have to pay for it.

Stop using the disk any further. Any more disk activity will decrease the amount of data you can recover.

ABSOLUTELY DO WHAT HE SAYS.

this is what i have been doing for a long long time, and i've had many windows disasters. when windows goes t1ts up i don't worry cos my data is on another partition (well in my case a different physical disk, but on my laptop i use the same arrangement but with partitions and a single hdd.)
