I'm going to be undertaking a new build in jan/feb comprising an i7cpu on a P6t with 6gb of ram and I'm unsure what operating system to go for.I love xp(home) and totally hate vista but had heard that XP pro 64 had some compatability issues with various pieces of hardware whereas vista should have better compatability.

Any ideas?

Vista is a fantastic OS. XP will be gone in a few years, and with an i7 processor, Vista will be much better suited to it than XP due to Vista's better use of resource.

Are people STILL using XP? wtf...

*raises hand*

Mostly because I have a WinXP x64 license so might as well use it rather than shell out for Vista x64. I'll survive on XP x64 until Windows 7 comes along.

doesn't really bother me which I use, you'll get fanboys in both courts

xp64 has no issues with hardware, as long as there's a driver for it. -so vista x64 is in the exact same boat in that respect

have been using xp64 and vista64 for ages, with no problems

remember xp64 shares the same codebase as server 2003 x64, so it's going to be rock solid stable

Either Vista x64 or xp home/pro (32 bit) as xp64 seems to have compatability/driver issues, whilst at least Vista x64 seems to have better driver support. XP 32 bit is generally compatible with everything (except dx10 and more than 4GB memory).

have been using 64bit windows for years, without problems

people with crap/weird hardware and lazy manufacturers are to blaim for any 'issues'

I wouldn't agree with the crap/weird hardware statement, but yeh, it's mainly down to lazy manufacturers not the os. All I was saying is that Vista x64 seems to be better supported.

Vista x64 isn't a new piece of software, as it's been out for ages now.

When I recently upgraded to vista x64 myself a month or so ago I was a bit unnerved by the lack of driver support I kept hearing about. However, I found no problems at all.

vista, windows 7 is coming so vista is what it will most be like i see no point in building any pc that is new with xp as great as the os is.

As far as I can tell, the only reason to use XP these days is if you already have XP. Otherwise, you may as well go Vista because it's not much more expensive, works just as well, and has some fancy features. Conversely, if you already have XP, there's not a lot of reason to upgrade to Vista.

You would be a fool to run XP by now really (sorry to everone who is), i was resisting the switch till last summer when i finally got it, and its a lot better (rubbish way to justify it but you know).

The best way to explain it is try using vista on a pc you built, like and generally feel is yours (i found i didnt like it on the laptops i'd been given) as when i put it on my desktop pc it was really really nice tow work with.

Plus theres no compatability problems with vista x64 :D

The only problem I ran into with vista x64 was getting flash media server to actually stream content! It installs the actual server fine, but when i try to add that server location as the source to say a flvplayback thing in flash (rmtp://xxxxxxx) I keep getting erros to do with the location of the file.

However, other than that no problems at all.

On, indeed. I'm terribly foolish for not rushing out and spending a bunch of money on Vista, when XP x64 does everything I need....

*sigh*

***edit***

Oh, and the few things about XP that I don't like aren't even fixed in Vista anyway, so I have a Ubuntu Intrepid install that takes care of that angle.
