:(
As title just finished a build and was transferring all my unsorted stuff onto the array of 10 disks/various sizes and the 2 of the buggers seem to have died
crashed volume and no disks/volume in sight

As it was `unsorted` I don`t know if it was good or rubbish(mostly free apps like macrium etc)so not irreplaceable. This is the most data (8TB ish)that I have lost in all my pc years
Back to W7 jbod for me

Any chance of a data recover?:(

You could try booting with a Linux pen drive (Ubuntu variant is useful) and running the mdadm commands from there:

https://www.synology.com/en-us/know...I_recover_data_from_my_DiskStation_using_a_PC

This will install MDADM and configure it on the pen drive and then scan for the array. If there is anything that it can use, it will be accessible... If it was just SHR1 and not 2 then it might be more difficult.

Shr with 1 disc redundancy. Thats shr 1 i think.:(
Thanks for the suggestion i will try tomorrow will have to re attach all cables first as i tried reading the one of the discs with a ext viewer in windows

Yup, that is single redundancy.

You might still be in luck, MDADM is quite powerful and can rebuild quite a bit, but you might have lost quite a bit of data.

I'm now looking at moving to an double parity system as I get concerned over the loss of a drive, especially on the raid rebuild. I've got enough large (3TB) drives to achieve this while still giving me some reasonable space.

lol not practical especially for `unsorted/rubbish`cost way too much money to backup ALL my crap
Important stuff like family photos docs etc ARE backed up to multiple hdds and dvds in various pcs around the home and a external hdd out side of home :)
EDIT And it gets worse :(
one of my WD reds in my htpc is showing multiple bad blocks and copying/moving files are failing too
Not have a good weekend here:(

Sorry for your loss however it emphasizes that RAID is not a backup solution.

Check and swap your SATA cables, I had SMART errors showing on a brand new HDD which I knew wasn't bad, swapped cable and it was fine.

Swapping cables now
Tried the ubuntu live usb,no go
won`t work
Slightly good news is that 2 of the hdds that were going into the array still had data on them so i have `only` lost around 3-4 TB

Yeah all show up.ubunto said something about permissions failing.have given up now and striped down the system and mothballed it for now.

Thanks for all the advice:)

Sorry for late reply guys been busy
Thanks for all the help.
I was spending way too much time on this project and after it went **** up I decided to shelve it for now
