PressPass: Does Windows 7 have higher system requirements with Windows XP Mode installed?

Woodgate: Yes. We recommend that customers use Windows XP Mode on a PC with 2GB of memory. We also recommend an additional 15 GB of additional disk space for Windows XP Mode. In addition, Windows Virtual PC requires a PC with Intel-VT or AMD-V enabled in the CPU, as it takes advantage of the latest advancements in hardware virtualization.

Whilst hardware virtualisation support is optional with Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Server 2005, it's compulsory with Hyper-V. I suspect the engine inside Windows 7 is based on the Hyper-V codebase, thus making hardware support mandatory.

There are a lot of budget CPU's there.

If WinXP mode was supposed to bridge the gap for companies etc to update to windows7 without fear of driver/software incompatibilities, then Im not convinced that they arent going to be using budget CPUs such as the ones listed.

But I could have sworn that the e5200 had virtualization listed on the its intel page, but apparently not now.

Aww, I don't have it on my E5200. I guess they cut it out of the budget and cheaper CPUs which sorta defeats the purpose, as xiphrex says, as well as some of the other requirements.

I've known my E7200 doesn't support VT since I brought it - bit of a bugger :(

Still, a reason for a shiney new quad eh ;)
