I have a dell XPS 420 how can I find out what type of RAM I need to buy for it?
Also do you have an suggestions?

Download CPU-z and post a photo shot of the memory and sdt tabs.

It's an Intel X38 chipset I think. Will be DDR2, probably PC2-5300 as dell usually use the cheapest RAM they can get away with. It MAY be PC2-6400. It should take up to 8192MB of RAM (4x2GB sticks) but that will also be limited by your OS - 32 or 64 bit.

If you get PC2-6400 you should be OK, but as RJC says just run CPU-Z and buy the same spec as what's already fitted. I highly doubt it will be PC2-8500. As for which brand to buy, I don't think it really matters.

I tried some 800 mhz kingston 1gigs in it with the 1gigs already in it and it said it wasnt compatible

What was the exact message? Sometimes it just warns of memory size change.
