7200 rpm hd or 5400?

is it worth the current £42 premium for the rise in rpm?

Will it drain the battery quicker? Is it worth it?

I dont think it will increase performance that noticeably ( just my opinion ).

I've just got a new XPS1530 last week and it's 5400rpm 250Gb drive seems plenty fast enough for me.

£42 seems a bit much for what would probably be a very slight bump in performance.

I recall reading somewhere that some 7200rpm HD's fitted to Dell's make one heck of a noise spinning up, but again, I'm not sure if that was just individual user/owners opinions.

The 7,200RPM drive will mean more heat, more noise and lower battery life, but will offer a reasonable increase in disk performance.

Well yeah, they'll use less power, certainly. If you're opting for the 4-cell battery (which doesn't give very long as it is), the 7,200RPM is going to cut down battery life even more. I've got a 5,400RPM drive in mine and the LED display, and battery life is fairly decent. Don't know what difference the CCFL display makes on battery life though; the 1330 I had before it had the CCFL display but a 6-cell battery.

I paid £5 to 'upgrade' my M1530's hard drive from a 160GB 5,400rpm to a 120GB 7,200rpm one and it's quite fast accessing files, so it was worth losing 40GB of space (besides, I have a massive external hard drive anyways).

But in your case, the £40+ isn't worth it to be honest.
