OK..so I had some damage to my old dell XPS M1710 and just had phonce call from insurance saying they will refund £1100 in cash to buy another this week. So thats basically what I have to buy a new laptop.

My old one had a Nvidia 7950GTX, 2.3Ghz Core 2 and 2Gb ram. It was decenet, but not overly powerful for gaming due to the 17"screen and playing at 1920 x1200 res.

Looking at getting a new one for arround that price, Dell do the XPS M1730..which comes with core 2 @ 2.4Ghz (T8300), 4Gb Ram, 250Gb Hard drive, Dual 8700M Graphics in SLI. How would the SLI 8700's compare to the 795-0GTX GO I had before?? Is this the best system I can get for that price...and how do they not do the XPS with the 8800 mobile graphics cards :(

Does anyone know of anything beter I can get for arrround £1100-1200

Cheers

Advent 7555 GX

They're not known for their brilliance, but they're based on an MSI laptop, so you should be fine

Personally I would avoid anything Advent. I recently bought some Advent Homeplug adapters and the driver disk to amend the encryption didn't work. I have not been able to find updated drivers or any more information about them. The lesson I learned from this is never to buy a rebranded 'purple shirt' product again and expect any kind of support.

Rock/Kobalt and plenty of others rebrand Clevo chassis (same as OcUK), Dell (Alienware) do the same but vary on what they get. (They tend to use Arima/Flextronics)

Most of the custom laptops available over here seem to be Clevo, and theres not really a very good performance showing in that market in the UK.

Only other model that might appeal to you is the just released HP Envy that I can think of, or an older machine without the I7 processor, inwhich case again you're looking at the likes of Clevo chassis.
