XPS Screen Help ?

Hi All I,m a bit puzzled, i have a DELL XL702 3D Laptop which has a res of 1920 x 1080 which is 16.9 widescreen ,but when i play a blu ray or dvd film in this type i still get the black bars at the top and bottom , why is this ? any help thanks

Many theatrically films are made in either the 1.85 or 2.35 aspect ratio, which is even wider than the 16x9 (1.78) aspect ratios of HDTVs.

At an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, a picture that is 1920 pixels wide would be 817 pixels high (1920 divided by 2.35 is 817). Thus you'll have around 130 pixels of blank screen above and below the picture.
