Jolly ol Stoke
dropped into OCUK to pick up an XSPC raystorm to use on my w/c build. Got home opened the box to discover that out of the 3 backplates illustrated in the instructions, only one was present. There was another plate but that doesnt match either of the other two in the manual. Im wondering if this is some mistake, or whether XSPC has revised the designs and not altered the manuals accordingly?

Apologies for the shocking phone pic but you get the jist of it

Raystorm comes in Intel and AMD flavours, that's the Intel version with what looks like the 2011/1366 backplate on the left and 1155/1156 on the right.

Edit: Ah wait, the 3rd block is 775 - I don't think they come as standard these days.

Yeh you have 2 out of three 3 there, the one on the left is 2011/1366 the one on the right is1155/56 I've had a few of these blocks now, off the top of my head, I can't remember seen the 775 one.
If you need the 775 one, let me know and il look through my box of bits, if I have one you can have it at no cost

Sorry if ive confused anyone, i need the 1155 plate, however the plate in the manual is different to the actual plate i recieved. Just wanted to make sure it was correct before i went ahead with anything

Can Confirm - use the one on the right.

Word of warning though - from where the sticky pads are so small, they don't stick to the motherboard - have some tape or a magical third hand ready (or so I found!)

I Agree, Especially the third hand, i found it really awkward to fit

Ye it sucks. Good my room mate always gives me a 'Hand' when i mess around with my cpu block.

This was one reason why I changed to another block - the fitting of the Raystorm is a fail imho. It is a shame that they did not have a design whereby the backplate is fixed in position with the posts - would be much easier. It is a shame really because they are good performing blocks otherwise.

I also couldn't help but feel when installing that the pins should have been thicker as there is a lot of movement when you put the first few in.

As you say, a shame but something we shouldn't have to do TOO often

I believe they changed the design of the 1155 backplate at some point. Reason I know this is because when I changed from an Asrock Extreme 4 Gen 3 to an Asus V Gene motherboard the backplate wouldn't fit. i had to butcher it to get it to fit over protruding soldering/component legs on the back of the board.

Got a pic somewhere but just make sure the metal isn't touching on any of the soldered points on the board mate - I emailed them about it but they didn't want to know tbh!

heres what I mean: http://lpig.wordpress.com/2012/01/30/xspc-raystorm-on-asus-maximus-iv-gene-z/

Completely agree with the back plate and mounting system being horrible to use.

I had the same problem with a Asus Gene-Z and the backplate not being compatible. They have since changed this. One thing I wouldn't be without is the aluminium mounting bracket. The Acrylic one is ****.

Well, i finally completed the build. I see what you mean about XSPC choosing to use such a rubbish mounting system :/ Will definitely be a consideration when it comes to upgrade from the raystorm! Oh well, thanks for the input guys :)
