This is the second one that has went up in smoke, literally. The first one fried about a year or so ago and I put it down to a lucky escape. It's happened again today, and thank God I was next to the PC at the time.

The insulation is melting off the cable at the sensor, causing a short circuit and smoke.

I had one go in more or less exactly the same place about 6 months ago. Luckily I only started it up to find out what colour it was and as soon as I saw the smoke I shut it down. I checked my in use ones and they seem to be ok at the moment. The Phobya ones look identical to these as well so maybe worth keeping a eye on thos if anyones has them.

I don't think the inner insulation has sufficient resistance, and when the cores get squeezed together when live it creates a short circuit, which pretty much instantly burns the insulation off.

In fact, I've got an IR tester so I'll check this out later.

I was lucky and the wires just fell out of mine, i stripped the unit to find a really poor solder job on the pcb, re-soldered and problem fixed

I have had two units where the Back light has died in very short order, they are not a quality device by any stretch....

But no one else seems to make a similar unit ... ?

I had one catch fire too. And a lot where the LED has completely faded. Might need to look for alternatives.

I was lucky with my last batch the LED's basically died after 11 months, so I demanded a set of replacements as it is in warranty.
Got them , but the new one's are doing exactly the same thing :(

The sensor cable is fine (I have one plugged into my MB header also), it's the indicator unit that catches fire.

Yeah i noticed mate. Aside from the Aquaero there doesn't seem to be any other choice for a display unless you want to go down the mod route. Saw a guy use Aida on his smartphone hooked up via USB IIRC to display temp info of his system. He had it mounted to side of his case - looked well cool. Myself i didn't need/want display so just got the probe.

Yea, AIDA picks up my sensor reading and I use it in BIOS to control radiator fan speeds based on fluid temperature, so no need for a digital output now (thankfully).

Ive had a look the Phobya units all have built in temp probes, you cannot change them/use the one from the xspc unit or anything...

Hmm :(
