I'm trying to install Xubuntu 7.04 under VMware Server 1.0.3 on my Core 2 Duo. Xubuntu 7.04 boots from the CD OK, but when I try to Install to the 3Gb Virtual Disk Drive the process hangs at 15% (Detecting File System...). Anyone else have this trouble?

Have you tried normal Ubuntu?

You could also try formatting the VMWare HDD. Hopefully someone with more VMWare experience will be able to help you.

Yea delete the VM in your Virtual Folders folder in My Documents, create a new one and try again.

I've just (after several failed attempts at getting Linux to run on RAID) installed the same setup within XP and it is running OK.

I gave the Virtual Machine 20Gb of space, other than that I used the stock settings for Ubuntu 64 bit.

It could well be because you haven't given it enough disk space. My Ubuntu VM is using almost 4GB of the 8GB I allocated so you need to give it 5GB as an absolute minimum.
