My drives are:

SSD - Windows 8.1
Hard Drive 1
Hard Drive 2

I want to install XUbuntu onto hard drive 1, but I do not want to put the boot loader on the SSD. The boot loader needs to go on Hard Drive 1 as well. i.e. I don't want Windows 8.1 affected in any way. Will the install program let me do that ? Then, to boot one or the other I'd simply need to change the drive boot order in the BIOS as appropriate, or maybe there is a boot-up key on the ASUS board (F12 ?) which enables me to select the drive.

Disconnect all the SSD and HDD2 then boot and install xubuntu
Then plug the rest of your drives in and press F12 on bootup to select which drive to boot from

This will keep the windows 8 and grub (xubuntu) bootloaders completely seperate
