Xvid same as Divx ?

Silly question but are the 2 the same format? Also if you do have an xvid film how do you burn it via burning software is as a data?

Sorry to ask such a simple question but if you could advise would apprecaite it

What do you want to do to the file? Play it in a DVD player? Does the DVD player support Xvid/Divx file formats?

Yes I want to play the xvid in a divx compatable player - from what you say I cannot do this if its an Xvid file .. the dvd player that plays divx doesnt recognise the disc does that mean the codec is not one it recognises ? Prersumably then there is no way round it ?

All DviX players can play XviD (or should be able to).
Some however wont play XviD if the Xvid has a "packed bit stream".
Download a program called mpeg4 modifier (under 1mb). You can load an XviD into it & check if the bit stream is packed or not. If it is you can untick the packed bit stream option & save it making the XviD fully compatible

Thank you for the info I have got the programe you mentioned, on the right it says packed then there is a box which says "unpack" which is empty do I put a tick in this box to "unpack" it and save it to a new location? would this be the reason why my divx dvd player didn't recognise the disc ?

Answers on a postcard please seriously though would someone advise

It's not just packed bitstream, divx doesn't support quarter pixel or global motion compensation, iirc.

So apart from the mpeg modifier and unpacking the stream, you are suggesting that there are other things that need to be looked at if the file still wont play?
