Hi guys, i was wondering if its possible to hookup a standard USB External HDD to my xBox and use it for watching films and playing tunes. The one i was looking at the 250Gb portable (USB powered) storage device. My 2 worries are:

* Can the xBox USB power it without a mains cable and also recognise the entire 250Gbs ?

* Will it recognize movie's I've uploaded to it and allow playback without any cracking of the system

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

whats with the sexbox style title?

You will need to make sure the harddrive is fat 32 file format (this means you cant have a single file over a 4gb file size limit)

And without looking at said HD, you'll need a mains cable to power it

Number 1 I already answered
Number 2 - the xbox 360 will play movie files from a external HD providing they are in the correct format

And linking to a competitor is going to get you in trouble.. I'd edit that out before you get suspended..

I was gonna buy an External hard drive but i wont bother now.

indeed, peeves me off, I have a 250GB seagate NTFS, which the 360 won't pick up, I know it's easy to convert without losing the data, but knowing my luck something will go wrong and I don't want to lose the data

x~~-> The 360 supports most file formats these days doesn't it? <-~~x

Indeed, I was merely stating that the 360 does struggle with some file formats, for example it supports AVI files, yet I have certain AVI's that won't play, it does support XVID IIRC, google it to find the complete list

Does it have to be FAT32? My 360 picks up my NTFS partitioned Lacie 500GB drive fine iirc.

Its fussy with some files though as said above.

Cool cos thats what i want, to use a 250Gb and have it as NTFS and just drag downloaded movies/ripped dvds and music and photos for use on my xBox and my ultra HUGE telly!

hmm I don't know then, I was sure it was only FAT32, I started out as NTFS and it wouldn't pick it up, then I have it half FAT and half NTFS and it still doesn't work, any ideas?

Out of interest, is there any reason you can't use a network to do that?

Well i only have a 256mb memory module in it right now and i also dont wanna have to keep my pc on just to watch a film or listen to music, also i can use the external memory for when im out at the office also.

Well ive seen '££££', '****' and all sorts so i don't know why a few 'XXX' get so many people hot under the collar lol!

Format the harddrive as a HFS+ format and then you can have >4gb files. There are programs out there that allows Windows to read/write to HFS+ drives. Macdrive being the best.

Yes it will power a 2.5" HDD. It will play WMV files. I have played 8gb 1080p WMV files with 5.1 using the above method.
