Hey Guys looking for some help Y-Cam YCBHD5 Cube HD 720p Im looking at installing one to keep an eye on the puppy that we are going to be getting soon, on the manufactures web page it says that

PoE Accessory
Offering heightened flexibility, the Y-cam Cube HD 720 can connect to a simple plug in PoE accessory allowing users to switch between Wi-Fi and PoE, optimising installation possibilities and perfect for installers and end users alike that wish for a convertible and flexible solution.”

Have I to assume from this that I could connect this cam up to my network via power line plugs? I just want to be able to log in using my phone in the day when I’m at work to check on the puppy that’s all i don’t need it to record at this stage, I’m just to too sure if it will automatically switch off the wireless side of it when the Ethernet cable is plugged it to it, and will i be able to assign it a static ip address?

Thanks for the help

Craig

PoE is NOT Powerline Networking.

PoE is Power over Ethernet and is a standard designed to deliver your network connectivity AND power for the device over the Ethernet cabling.

You will either need a PoE enabled switch (Seems unlikely for you at this stage) or you will need to buy a PoE 'accessory'. Usually these are little AC like adapters that inject power into the cabling an need to be plugged into a power source at the end on which it is attached.

I am unfamiliar with the Y-CAM PoE accessory/solution but in short the kit will allow you to place a camera with Ethernet cabled network connectivity AND power with a single run of cabling.

As for remote viewing, you will need to consult the Y-CAM documentation and port forward on your router appropriately. I am not a fan of exposing such HTTP(S) streams to the open web but it's the easiest way. If you want more security consider a VPN if your router/remote device supports it.

Yes, you will need to assign a static IP to the camera, be it via DHCP reservation or manual config on the device should it support it.

If you do not take the PoE route you will need to power the device from wherever you position it. If you have a power source where you want it placed....easy. Just run network cable from your Powerline adapter and another power cable from the same power source.

Thanks for the post back.

Right so i will run an ethernet cable and power cable to the Y-Cam then if thats the case....... thats fine it will make no difference to me due to where im going to locate it.

Has anyone used Y-Cam on homeplugs at all have you had an issues?

I take no responsibility if it's not compatible, but any POE splitter should work. Basically, connect existing power supply to splitter, connect ethernet cable, run ethernet cable to cam, and then split at the other end (into power and ethernet) - the kits should come with all you need, but check the plug compatibility at the cam end
