From MS newsletter.
"SUNNYVALE, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash. — 29 July, 2009 — Yahoo! and Microsoft announced an agreement that will improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers, and deliver sustained innovation to the industry. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search."

"bing" is perhaps the stupidest name I have ever heard for a website.
I almost died when I typed "live.com" and was redirected to bing.com. Thought some kind of adware had infected my computer :(

If you search for something that people actually want to advertise against however (and disable admuncher) you get

microsoft can't do search to save their lives. have you ever tried searching their own site? even with very specific keywords you get no results. actually they might have improved things since i last used it but i don't care. i just use google with "site:". i always find what i'm looking for.

True, however I think there is a significant difference between having 5 TEXT/URL adverts running down the side of the page, and then going on to something like Yahoo and having a dozen flash or animated gif adverts that are hosted from different sites than the search engine itself that take ages to load ...

Oh i'm not saying the other search sites don't do advertising - I just couldn't believe someone suggested Google carried no adverts for search. It's fundamental to their business model and how they make their money. On that one search there's three "sponsored" links presented at the top of the results, eight adverts down the side and an option to click for more sponsored links.

As an aside, Bing in the UK is in beta and still using the old live search engine, if you set your preferences to USA you get the new bing search stuff (although you won't get automatically localised content of course).

in my personal opinion, i dont think any one will be able to compete with google ... it's just so well known now, and as Marc says, everyone these days just says "google it" ... it's become like the norm lol

I prefer Google. But have they just taken over the search, or have they gone the full hog which means they have gone in with BT. The current address for BT broadband users is www.bt.yahoo.com. Who know it might become www. bt.microsoft.com.
