Anyone have any idea how the Yamaha stereo amps compare to the stereo receivers?

I'm currently looking at building a shortlist and was looking at the Yamaha S801 which is around £600. However they also do a model called the 803D which looks to have the same specs of the S801 but with network/streaming extra functionality. It's also about £50 cheaper.

Lower down the range it seems they have alternate numbers. So i presume the S301 is comparable to the 402D and the S501 is comparable to the 602D

Actually, now i'm talking it through i assume therefore that the 803D is more likely to be comparable to the S701 rather than the S801.

Anyone have any idea for confirmation though? Only Peter Tyson sell the 803D and the sales guy i spoke to on the phone had no idea other than to say they were both great amps :/

Yeah i spotted your thread over on AVF

Stock seems to be insanely low everywhere which doesn't help!

I've a feeling i'd be happy with the 602N given my current situation, but i can't help myself looking higher up the range!

Cheers guys, i've ended up ordering an ex-dem S801 for £499 which is being delivered tomorrow. The store is fairly local to me so if i decide against it i can always return it.

Looks like the main difference between the S801 and the S701 is the addition of a USB input which will be handy for me connecting the Raspberry Pi.

Pretty happy with the sound of the S801 so far from limited listening. Although i think i'm having slight buyers remorse. My long term goal is to work on my wife to let me move my amp/speakers either side of the TV which would hugely improve the sound quality, much more so than just buying new stuff.

Having the 803D would aid me in doing this because i could pick up the new Yamaha turntable which has music cast built in. That would let me leave it where it is rather than moving the whole hifi over to near the tv.

I'd probably go for it if i was you if you can afford it. Overwise you're always wondering "what if"

I decided to buy the little Yamaha WXAD10 musiccast box for mine. Pretty much turns it into the 803 but with the better dac and USB input which is handy for me. Have also picked up the matching Yamaha CD player.

Yeah, i found the S801 pretty weighty too. Might be different on the 803 but you can tell the transformer is on the left as the weight distribution is mental. It's a good job it's not a car!

The box isn't too bad to be honest. It's easily carryable (helps i'm over 6ft though so have long arms to reach round!)

I've had some amps around double the weight. They were awkward!
