I am on the look out for a home audio setup, I currently use the tv speakers which are shocking to say the least.

Budget wise I am thinking around £4-500 for the receiver and the speakers.
From a little read about AV Receivers, I have decided on something like the Yamaha RX-V377 or the 477. Good choice?

I am struggling however to choose some speakers, I do not really want the hassle of a 5.1 surround just yet, mainly because I live in a rented apartment and don't want to rip up the carpets to hide cables etc, so ideally I would like a decent 2.0 or 2.1 setup to start with.

I have been looking on Richersounds, it would appear some good budget speakers are the Wharfdale Diamond 220's? Any suggestions? Anything on the second hand market to look out for?

I am not against some floor standers, but I'm not sure my budget will cover anything worthwhile?

TL DR Audio noob looking for speaker and AV receiver advice

Cheers

Mike

If colour isn't a massive issue and you could increase your budget slightly you can get the Monitor Audio BX6 speakers for a bargain price at the moment.

I paid £650 for those a year ago and they are worth it even at that price, so for under £350 that is a crazy price.

Ignore that, they came back in stock and I bought them! Bit of an impulse purchase but reviews are promising and I'm guessing if they aren't to my taste they shouldn't be difficult to shift!

Bit of an Hukd addict lately!

So now for the receiver, any thoughts?

Yamaha have always been my go to when it comes to AV receivers, I have the 677 powering my BX6's.

Though receivers are kinda in limbo at the moment in regards to 4K and HDCP 2.2 support and also the fact I don't think any of them support the newer 4K stuff like HDR and such.

If I were to choose right now I'd probably get something from their budget range, like the 377 as you were looking at, with a view to upgrade it to something more powerful once the newer specs are all locked in, which should be next years models by the looks of it.

I have just set a 2.1 system up for myself but spent about £800. Denon AVR2100w and the Q-Acoustics 3050 floorstanders and 3090 centre speaker. Its sounds amazing :) still in the process of hiding wires etc.

Spit, do you find you need a centre speaker with the fronts right next to TV? I just have fronts and rears at the moment....

I tried it both ways and it's definitely much nicer with a centre speaker. The dialogue has a dedicated speaker with the speech coming from the centre and effects left and right.
