Yay, Another Tyre fred...

I have that size and I love the CS3s, they're a great tyre. If you can get the CS5s though, they're even better.

On a side note, I should get the alignment done, should I always go for someone with a hunter type machine or does it not matter?

I've no idea what you are waffling about now.

First you tell us you never bother with allignment you just get the tracking done. Then you say that obviously you get the allignment checked when you have tyres. Then you get all sarcastic when I ask what you do if you are told its out at the back?

From what Phate was saying, he's going for a full geometry set up. I dont bother getting that done, I just get the alignment/tracking checked and if need be, get it adjusted. The only time I get a geo set up is when I buy the car. I hope that makes more sense, I reread and concur that my previous posts were quite confusing.

I think what Phate is actually going for is what you normally get. Not a full custom geo setup but just getting the camber/toe adjusted back to manufacturers specs if they are out, and left alone if they are not :)

Nail, hammer, head.

Considering alignment and 'geo' are one and the same, it doesn't make much sense. Put the car on the rig, get a reading, fix whatever is out of spec, that's normally how it works isn't it. Unless it's some kind of ghetto alignment system that's in use.

He's talking about people who pay Wheels In Motion eleventybillion pounds to do a custom setup.

Quite.

I think there are 3 (ish) typres of alignment

1 - Kwik Fit 'Trackings alright bruv' toe alignment changes to something close to pointing forward, ideally with a machine that one day, probably 25 years ago might have been calibrated.

2 - An alignment at a reputable garage using decent kit (hunter/beisbarth/whatever) which has been looked after to within spec (Green all round) on the read out. Figures might not match side to side, but its a decent setup.

3 - Alignment to figures matching side to side. Discussions with the owner as to whether the car understeers/oversteers and whether they want it correcting/amendements to manufacturers specifications due to modification of the suspension components. Potentially part of an ongoing piece of work on the car with further adjustments included in the price.

For 99.9999999% of people, 2 is fine.

You can't generalise these alignment jobs.

You could have everything out of spec but it doesn't matter when your car is only front toe adjustable.

On RWD cars, you'll often find rear toe is adjustable too.

There aren't too many cars that are camber/caster adjustable out of the box, much less in the way of hot hatches and other FWD motors. Earlier Golfs and Corrados etc are the exception to this, but I'm generalising.

Put simply, some cars might need over an hours worth of adjustment, others, like those that only have front toe adjustable can only possibly have 10 minutes spent on them.

Of course, once your car has been setup, you'll find most of these operators don't have a clue anyway, and the settings will be wrong once your suspension has settled properly. (I've seen so many that think that driving off and on the ramp is enough, and some that haven't bothered at all!)

If I couldn't be bothered to do it myself, was having a decent geo done and everything was adjustable on my car, I'd pay someone like WIM to do a decent job (a local is going there with his MX5 and paying a whopping £110) - you really do need to find someone that has a clue.

Just make sure you're not paying £100 if only the front toe is adjustable :p

I don't know if its only front toe adjustable, and quite frankly, I don't particularly care.

I go there, they take a look at my car, tell me where its out, if at all, if it is, they fix it and I pay them moneys.

JOB DONE.

Front toe adjustment does literally cost £10 in most places, so for £100 I am expecting a full set up and adjustment with a print out after. You should find out before handing over £100.

Well ofcourse. Like I said I've used them before and they are a fantastic outfit that know their stuff. Maybe I should have mentioned that they will give me before and after print outs but given they use hunter machines I can't think of any garages with them that wouldn't give you one. :)
