Can anyone confirm if they have installed Yellow Dog Linux on their PS3, does it play .mkv files without any problems?

And this is a real longshot but....do subtitles work too? :D

Thanks if you can help

I was going to suggest using VLC too. I know it plays .mkv files, and even if there's no binary for YDL available you could always compile from source. I'd say it's worth a go.

Well I finally got around to trying this, Installed Ubuntu and have just installed VLC, .mkv playback works but its jerky as hell (im guessing this has something to do with linux only being given a certain amount of resource from cpu/mem)

I will try YDL later but I expect it to be the same, have ran out of DVD's, just sent the mrs out to buy me some more :D

I have played mkv in the PS3 just using xmb. Obviously I had to do a conversion of the video files, but to get mkv to play you do not have to re-encode the whole video. so the actual conversion is less than 10 mins. Then just copied onto a USB stick, plays back flawlessly. Obviously not everyone is happy to re-encode their files if they have lots, but it is very quick using pspvideo9.

As far as I know you cannot run 720p mkv files in Linux yet without excessive jerking.

Thanks rp2000, do subtitles work though? thats the most important thing for me...

No they don't (I assume you mean seperate subtitle files that you would load using VLC or Media Player Classic etc).
