Hi all,

For what ever reason I have suffered many internet problems throughout the years but never thought about posting it on here so here goes;

My current provider for my broadband is AOL/Talk Talk.

For many years I have had my router upstairs in the computer room and we have been receiving 0.20MB, which was enough to play online games ect.. but it is pretty dam poor since I have been able to check my speed through speedtest.net.

So after endless of phone calls with AOL we decided to move the router downstairs to where the main phone socket plugs in too. All sockets in the house hold have ADSL adapters.

So the router is wired in downstairs all set up and ready to go, the ADSL Adapter in the wall first then Phone Line then internet and we still recieve 0.20MB

Now we have taken the face plate off and there is another socket inside the test socket, so we have now plugged into that instead and are recieving connection speeds of 7 - 8MB which is a vast improvement over what we was previously receiving.

I have changed the plate on the socket and there is still problems, all wires are connected fine, I have phoned AOL again and they are sending a technician down free of charge after a very long phone call to see if they can do anything.

On my computer I get 3 - 4 Bars of signal out of 5 pretty constantly (Wireless) however I keep getting a exclamation mark coming up and it says no internet connection and this happens many times each day.

AOL say the line from there end is fine but to be honest I don't believe a word they say cause all they seem to do is fob me off down the phone every time.

If someone could give me a heads up if there is something I haven't looked at yet or could I possibly try anything else? I don't want the technician to come around next week and fob me off with the same story.

Thanks in advance guys, I know its a long read but I have had it up to here with the connection problems.

Two separate problems.

For the connection speed you just need to sort out your extension wiring and/or what's plugged into the extensions. Disconnect everything and then reconnect things until the problem returns.

For the wireless try changing wireless channels as a first step.

When you take the plate off the front of your master socket it disconnects all the internal wiring. The fact that when you do this you get a good connection demonstrates the issue is with your internal wiring not the phone line to your house.

I'm surprised AOL are sending an engineer for free. It is normal that you agree to pay the callout fee if the fault is found to be on your side of the master socket. At any rate he should be able to isolate the problem.

If you are investigating yourself I'd do as bremen1874 suggests. The first thing to try is unplugging everything plugged into your phone sockets and see if that fixes the problem. If so you can start adding devices till the problem recurs. If not there must be a wiring fault/poor connection in your house.

I assume you have tried a different filter on the router?

Your extensions must be really very bad to drop the speeds that much. If Openreach are coming prepare to pay £138 for customer equipment fault. Cancel the appt and fix yourself for free.

Surely the answer is as simple as plugging the router into the master socket and then the router into a powerline adapter? Another adapter in whichever room you are using and you should be set?

If you switched to a BT Infinity package, the Open reach engineers would sort out the wiring free of charge. (Too a certain extent)

They can do two things for you:

1. Move your master socket to the room where you want it (if possible).

2. If they cant move it, they can run a cable from the master socket to somwhere else in your house.

Your extensions/internal wiring certainly sound like the problem. Also don't forget every device which is connected to an extension socket needs its own filter.
