Well i might finally be stung with a penalty charge after all these years of being squeaky clean :(
There were two lanes across a junction box, left lane for straight and left turn and right lane straight only. I was in the right lane, the lights went green and it was moving ok but then a car from the left lane cut into the right at such an angle that it stopped cars in front of me and another in the left lane, so basically us two are in the box. Didn't move until the congestion caused by the car cleared up and i guess it was red by then.
Saw one of those little black round dome cameras above the box, guess i'm stuffed?

Doesn't sound like it was your fault, so stop worrying

It doesn't work like that. The offense is stopping in a box junction and the highway code is clear that you don't enter unless your exit is clear or you are turning right and blocked by oncoming traffic.

As Fox said. Don't enter unless you can exit. Judging the flow of traffic as a way to tell if you can enter the box isn't guaranteed. Of course this is how the majority of people do it.

They are nazis with the box cameras. I know someone who got stuck with about 1ft of his rear inside it and they still sent him a fine. Even though he clearly wasn't an obstruction :/

That sounds like just a regular CCTV camera though.

Oncoming traffic is not the exit though, the law states, "You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right."

So the OP has nothing to worry about.

The OP states that the right hand lane is straight only so how was he going to turn right or am I misreading?

I imagine they'll be able to see that the reason the OP is stuck in the box is because the car in front of him has pulled a penis maneuver blocking him in it so it should be easily contested should it come to anything.

Edit: that's if it was the car directly in front, if not then you might have a tougher time proving it depending on how much the camera picks up.

Read the OP again, it was nothing to do with turning right or oncoming traffic.

For the OP to have got trapped by traffic caused by someone ahead changing lanes like a knob, his exit couldn't have been clear before he entered, which is why the rule is what it is really.

I sympathise though, as it's rare anyone uses yellow boxes to the letter of the law.

Still stands, the "exit" was clear.

Doesn't sound like it, he's said there were 'cars' in front of him that were blocked by the idiot lane changer, implying at least 2 cars in front of him, so if he got stuck in the box, I don't see how his exit could have been clear.

If he was directly blocked by the lane changer then maybe but it doesn't read like that to me.

Yep, cars.. well nothing as yet and it was Thursday. Have looked and seen those same cameras around where there was no yellow box or junction so maybe i got lucky. Guess a week or two with nothing should be ok?

I WISH they would put some kind of deterrant at the exits from the dual cabbageway tot the metro centre.

At weekends its absolutely retarded the amount of time you sit at the lights regardless of if they're green or red because some muppet decided to sit in the middle of the yellow box!

Policemen at the junctions with on the spot fines should do.
