I think this realease might just push me into trying it out on the PS3. My other halfs laptop is on its way out and a friend of mine who has a PS3 is on a budget so may not now need to buy a PC for internet, mail, wordprocessing etc.

YELLOW DOG LINUX v6.0 OFFERS ENTERPRISE QUALITY

LOVELAND, Colorado - 5 February 2008 - Terra Soft today released Yellow Dog
Linux v6.0 for Sony PS3, Apple G4/G5, and IBM System p. Built upon the CentOS
foundation, a popular derivative of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), YDL v6.0
offers enterprise quality for the home user.

"This particular release marks an important point in our history, leading into
our tenth year of Linux OS development and distribution for the Power
architecture. To put things in perspective, in the spring of 1999 all
installers were text-based, cell phone modems functioned only in the movies,
and the fastest desktops ran at 300MHz ... it would be another year before we
shipped with AltiVec support. Now, the Cell CPU offers 3.2GHz across 9 cores
and our cell phones nearly equal the performance of a desktop of 1999,"
states Kai Staats, Terra Soft CEO.

YDL v6.0 delivers the professional quality of an enterprise level Linux
distribution to a just-works desktop experience for both PS3 and Apple
PowerPC. Built upon CentOS with select Fedora 7 components, YDL v6.0
integrates the "E17" desktop to provide a lean, uncluttered interface.

Staats concludes, "We remain proud to provide the finest Linux OS for Power
experience, and it just keeps getting better. Many thanks to Red Hat, the
open source community and CentOS team, IBM and Sony for making YDL v6.0
possible. Enjoy!"

Yellow Dog Linux v6.0 supports:

- Apple PowerPC G4, G5.

So does this have full access to the cell and memory, allowing high def files to be played on vlc? i think previous releases couldnt cope despite the huge power of the ps3.

Wasn't it the RSX chip that they couldn't access previously?
Would be good to know if they have full support now.

Im buying a ps3 tommorrow and gonna shove linux on it. Think i'll try YDL as its supposed to be "the offical" linux Os for PS3.

One Q. Can you easily partition the lappy drive within the Game OS. I mean is it easy for me to split the Drive say:

75 GB for Game OS and say 125GB for YDL.

I did read a review on installing YDL on a ps3 but it wasn't to clear about partitioning drives to various sizes.

I can't find any info to say they've added RSX support, but then I don't think that is the reason HD material is a bit ropey at times, my HTPC with the crappest on-board graphics can manage full 1080p blu-rays, it's the processor that is just doing the work...

I'm encouraged that Xbox Media Centre is coming to Linux, and as such will the one thing that could single handedly turn the PS3 into a 'proper media machine'..

you could just install mythtv.

When I last did this you had the option of 10gb Linux partition and the rest GameOS or 10gb GameOS and the rest Linux.

Perhaps this depends on and scales with the size of disc you have installed in the PS3.

I already have mythTV, I can't get it to work properly, It won't play my 1080p MKV's with DTS, or 1080p WMVHD's with WMA9pro.. I'm always trying the 'latest' versions, but it's not there yet (for me at least).

In fact, I am struggling to get a lot of of HD media to either play or play smoothly.. I just thought that the XBMC scene was a little more coordinated.. perhaps I am wrong..

Maybe you'll have better luck with YDL 6 as this has been optimised much much more for the PS3 and the Cell architecture.

I tried the previous version of Yellow Dog the PS3 first came out. After forcing me to partition and format my HDD, it took 2 hours to install:eek:

So do we think someone will be kind enough to install V6 of this YDL thing and see if VLC will play back MKV files? (I am too lazy unfortunately, and with a HDD upgrade of my ps3 in very near future, can't be bothered to install it!)

YDL 6 is not available on the public servers for another month yet - so maybe you could do it to coincide with your HD upgrade ? ;)

I AM SCARED TO DO IT!!! :D

Well, when it's available I'll get a new HD and do it. I need to showcase it to my other half and a few friends who may utilise it and not have to buy laptops for internet / email / wordprocessing etc.

If someone gets there before me then let us know how you get on. I'll keep you guys posted anyway.
