Yellowstone waking up?

could be interesting, but as it has the biggest lava chamber in the world or close to it we would indeed be screwed.

There was a film about this on sometime ago and it was quite interesting to watch. Not sure how accurate it was but it pretty much produced a ash cloud that covered the whole of the USA and would also affect the rest of the world. No flights to or from the US for one.

If yellowstone goes off just HOW BAD would it be and why?

Would it be mostly the amount of ash it throws into the air thats the problem?

That's the end of part one - you'd have to backtrack to the beginning. It indeed is quite fascinating :)

Except for the destruction in the immediate area (which would be pretty large).

The problem is not 100% the ash, but also sulphur dioxide and other gases.

The effect is to reflect sunlight back into space and thus cooling the planet.

This sets of a chain of events leading to an ice age

Not to mention that the various ashes, gases and whatnot would by the nature of the spectacular explosion be pushed up into the highest levels of the atmosphere.

Things if I remember correctly take a long time to come down due to the strong winds?

"we don't want to panic anyone, it could blow tomorrow, it could blow in a thousand years!"

Oh great.

EDIT: "all you can do is run!"

uh.........drive?

Not really - the moment people start panicking all the roads will get clogged up - imagine your daily morning traffic and magnify that tenfold. Your best bet would be a bicycle or a motorbike really but then you can't take your family with you.

Who will be most effected? are we safe in the UK? I don't care about other lives just my own!

IF it happened the whole planet would be affected in one way or another. But anyone within about 500 miles of it would be worst hit. IE mostly dead.

On the other hand, the cooling of the planet would help re freeze the ice caps and save the polar bears habitat.

For us in the UK it means a few things. No more OC on the TV, No holidays to Vegas, the song "California girls" would never get played again, weed production would fall through the floor. Also we may get quite cold which as we know would shut the country down.
