Hey all....

Hope you are all enjoying the roll up to christmas.....

OK....not a noob to the scene but a bit lost as to what to do right now with OCUK's price cut tragidrama

I game at 1440 x 900

My rig is an Athlon X2 3800, 2gig 3200, Tagan 480w PSU and 2 SATA HDD's.

The price difference between the GTX and GTS is totally negligible IMO.

Dont ask if i game with AA or not......i just want the best possible gaming experience possible, if that is with AA then that is it.

I am just at a loss as to which to get.

The 760MB pulls me the GTX way

The new tech pulls me the GTS way.

Im not interested in running OC'd for now....perhaps in the future.

Stock for stock though, am i right in thinking the GTX bones the GTS though?

All opininos appreciated people, especially as papa claus (AKA mrs wifey) has to buy this and get it shipped to Northern Ireland for me before christmas.

Cheers

Andy

No only with AA and AF does the gtx pull ahead if i were buying now though i would still get the gtx seeing as it's £234 yes it's better than the new gts and gt.
But not by a big amount i wold consider the 8800gt if you want great value.

I'd recommend the 8800GTX, it's a low resolution but if your going use lots of AA/AF then it will provide better performance and most importantly a higher minimum framerate.

The 8800GTS might average higher sometimes but the minimum framerate is lower, basically the gap between high and low on the GTS is quite large due to the combination of a very high core speed and comparatively low bandwidth.

GTX, its just the best ballanced card out (still). Plus with the price difference being so small between the GTS and the GTX atm it's just daft to go with a GTS.

Just out of curiosity to all you recommending the GTX over the GTS do any of you actually have any experience with the GTS? Or are you basing you opinion just on paper?

I previously have owned a EVGA GTX AC3 and now am the proud owner of a new GTS and i can tell you the GTS is F'in awesome, it stomps on the AC3s 3dMark06 score and it can't all be down to driver development.

The new GTS is just insanely fast

3DM06 scores mean nothing.

A HD3870 scores higher than a GTX, does that mean its a better card for gaming?

The new GTS has great raw power it can shove shaders out like anyones business, and if all you care about is raw FPS the GTS is the better card.

If you game and want better eyecandy, i.e. AA in your games then the moment you turn that on the GTX are the better card.

I am basing my oppinion on the umpteen million benchmarks that are floating around the web, and the scores people have been posting on this site.

I was answering Sm00gel :D

ahh, yes, 3dmark06 is a pointless benchmark unless you play older games exclusively at 1280*1024 with no AA/AF then it's a very good benchmark.

It's a little outdated now to even represent performance in new games at 1280*1024, we need 3dmark07/08 with AA by default hopefully. :D

I'm just wondering if anyone with the new GTS would recommend the GTX over the GTS?
I definitely wouldn't.

If I had a GTS now I wouldn't change to a GTX, just the same as I have a GTX and wouldn't change to a GTS.

However if I was buying now (and I was a week ago) I would buy a GTX over a GTS (and have done).

I sold my GTX, was going to go Crossfire 3870's, changed my mind. Decided to stick with a single card.

Had the choice of 8800GT, 8800GTS, or the GTX again.

I went with a GTX again as imho it is still the better card.

I think I am sold on the GTX - I'm running at 1920 x 1200 on a 24" lcd with a 7800 GTX at the moment. The only possible thing holding me back could be my cpu - X2 3800 running at 2500 (on A8nSLI mobo).

Would my cpu be an issue? (sorry for the mini hijack)

At that res you will be more GPU limited than CPU anyway.

I went from a 7800GTX to a 8800gtx, at 1920x1200 your games will fly fly fly baby. COD4 at max settings and 1920x1200 looks amazing.
