After splitting with my partner I'm in need of a new car :(.

Budget: 5-7k
Petrol and 'fun'
Manual
High spec: I would like cruise control, climate control, bluetooth, leather and ideally satnav.

I'm currently set on a Honda Civic 1.8 in EX trim around 2006-2007. The ex trim gives me all the toys I want and 'nice' aesthetics. I wouldn't like any less than the 1.8 I-VTEC in terms of performance.

Any suggestions? As much as a Focus would meet my requirements I'm not a fan of the aesthetics when compared to the Civic.

If you need practicallity, then a E46 330ci/convertible would be a good shout, you'd get a cracker with your budget.

if not, my choices if i was looking would be - Z4, 350Z, Boxster S 986 (wildcard).

After something more compact, EP3 CTR, Megane 225/230.

Fun for me is anything with a reasonable amount of poke! I'm not that much of a petrol head.

Practicality wise I'm undecided. The last car I owned was my MX-5 Berkeley and I managed with that. I think I'm leaning more towards a 5 seater now though.

I like the idea of a Civic Type-R but I'm not sure if my budget would allow for a good example?

The e46 330Ci is a good shout, I'll get looking :).

Depends on what version of the Type R you're thinking.

Quick scan of PH for Examples

EP3 CTR

FN2 CTR

I much prefer the EP3, but with a bit of haggling, you could get an FN2 down to your budget.

But you can definately get a Good CTR in your Budget.

I'm not a fan of the EP3, doesn't appeal to me. That FN2 looks nice. I also spotted this nearby, love the estoril blue but shame there's no NAV unit.

I've got the Nav of that age in my Z4 and it's next to useless. The only reason it's worth getting is because people prefer cars with nav when it comes to selling!

Sounds contradictary really.

Don't like the Black tacky trim on that BMW, and an auto....he's asking too much for it I think, if its close by its worth having a look, get a feel for the car.

This is one someone posted on the BMW Owners thread (Worth looking through if considering a 330)

Went to view this Honda Civic today.
  • "FSH" turned out to be the opposite. It was last serviced in 2012! He argued that the last service was done <12k miles ago. I pointed out the "or 60 months whichever first."
  • One power folding door mirror didn't work. He said the driver's side one is never power folding.
  • Big hole in the carpet from what I'm guessing is a high-heel shoe
  • Different tyres on every corner, all ditch finders
Needless to say I walked away! Finding the spec Civic I want will be difficult, the nearest one is Northern Ireland!

I'm also toying with the idea of a Mini Cooper or Cooper S like this! Any views? I've not done much research into these but insurance is cheap and I imagine the Cooper S is reliable? I believe this one is an R56 meaning newer nav unit etc.

Tbh I can't believe people would buy a specific model of car just because it has sat nav. Given that every modern phone has sat nav built in and the availability of a standalone gps. ..
