...learning about engines the hands on way and fixing my head gasket! And now the cars never felt so good, just going to finish the procedure tomorrow with an oil and filter change, and shes all set to go again :D

Of course there was time for the much needed photo ducumentary for y'all to enjoy!

Car engines must suck to work on :|

It was bad enough when the engine was the size of a Transit van and i could climb all over it and access it from almost any angle :\ working on a car engine must be 23414 x worse :|

oops, forgot about this,

Yeah! Chain drive cam, they sure do build em tough in Oz!
It would have been a very tough guessing game, especially as sadly this beaut of a car never saw UK shores (I might change that though)

a 2.5 Beemer? Nah, its a 4 litre EA Ford Falcon Wagon,

And as of today I am setting off to take it all the way around this island, and have a bit o fun along the way! A leisurely 36,000KM trip...

 Family wagon from here

I hate those cars almost as much as i hate holdens :p

They are a dime a dozen down here aswell :o

there are few things more satisfying that doing major work to your car and nothing going wrong.

my car is completely imobile at the moment due to a couple major components being off :P

Quick question,

When people say they have a ported head and polished something or other, what does that actually mean?

well i dunno if this is the same but rc petrol cars.. that meansthe ports are to do with the amout of fuel gets let into the piston on every stroke n they polish the crack and piston bits n bobs for better explosion.. could be diff on a car so dont hold me to it.

The head has its ports enlarged and polished, so you can get a larger volume and higher flow rate of gas into the combustion space. :)

ok on a head you have inlet and exhaust ports, these allow air/petrol and exhaust gasses to flow when the apropriate valves are open and they connect to the manifolds.
from stock these are often quite a rough finish creating friction in the airflow and limiting the amount of air/fuel you can get in an the amount of exhaust you can get out.
So they get "ported" this means enlarging them so they can allow more flow and "polished" this creates a smooth surface less friction and allows a higher volume of air to get into/out of the combustion chamber.

this is a very simple explanation but head work is very complex and really needs someone who knows what they are doing (not someone sat on a bench with a dremmell) and setup with a flowrate meter so you can test the work you are doing.

but in simple terms it allows more fuel and air in and more exhaust out, this means more power.

ofc this is then limited by valve size, and then by cam lift and duration.
