Yet another 64bit router moan

Hi all,

I'm currently stuck using my Linksys WRT54GL on XP Pro as there are no 64bit Vista drivers (still!).

Can anyone recommend a cheap wireless cable router that works 'out of the box' with Vista64? I don't want to have to start flashing God knows what with dodgy firmware. Tried having a search but couldn't seem to see much apart from some USB modems.

Thanks,

Dean

Would be nice if OCUK mentioned on the site in the product description the OS's supported.

But the router doesn't need or use drivers!

I'm confused as well. You plug your computer into the router with an network cable. At no point are drivers involved, except for the network card on the winxp box. A network device doesn't support operating systems, it's a network device. So it sits on the network.

Also, the WRT54GL isn't a cable router, it's just a router, which you can plug any modem into that you want.

He's right. Is there any specific reason why you are in need of a driver? Most DSL routers simply plug in and issue your PC with an IP address. Once you've got that, you just need to find the gateway from your PC (usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.0.254) and then connect to that address in your web browser. You'll need the username and password for the device, which can be found underneath or in the manual. From the web interface, you are able to configure all the details within the router, so that it will connect up to your ISP.

Unfortunately, most routers do come supplied with a CD which will usually say something along the lines of: "Install this CD first" or something to that effect. It's a load of junk, you don't need to install anything before you can use your router.

Sorry for the confusion, I know it's not a modem.

I plug my virgin supplied modem into the router, the router to my pc (all as per usual) but it doesn't find any network and if I input the 192. etc thing in my browser to access the router it doesn't do anything.

I usually use the supplied cd to configure the modem which has always worked on xp 32bit, when I try to run this on vista64 it says it is incompatible.

If I’m just being a plum and you can suggest a fix or clarify the procedure I’d appreciate it.

thanks guys, was writing this and didn't see your message until i posted chokka, i'll try the browser bit again over the weekend and see what happens, maybe i inputted the wrong address or something.

(cd is being junked as we speak).

:)

Hey KraniX

If you need to find the IP once the router has been connected, click on Start, then go to Run. Type in "cmd" (without the quotes) and at the command prompt, type in "ipconfig" (again, without the quotes). This should give you a readout with your own IP address, and then one for the Default Gateway. The Default Gateway is your router's IP address (which you can use to connect to through a browser), assuming that your PC is getting it from DHCP. If you haven't manually configured your network card, or you don't know what Static and Dynamic IP addresses are, then it's a safe bet that your router will be assigning the IP addresses for you.

seems i have been a right chump with this, reinstalled vista last night and as i'd configured the router already in XP it just worked perfectly from the word go. lol.

cheers for all the advice guys, vista64 is running sweet (for now, heh).
