Yet another gaming PC spec-check-me-do (not a P35 based one!!!!)

I must say this is the second time in a month that i ask for spec checking. What is the difference? Well now i actually have the money and i am ready to buy!!! :D


The idea is to have an upgrade friendly system so i don't have to touch the motherboard or the PSU in one or two years.

I am not too bothered about the performance on Day 1. I want solid but not outstanding performance. I am relatively new to PC gaming, the last PC game i played was Half Life 2. I want to play all good games i have missed since then and a few classics like Deus Ex.

What do you think about it?

I am not sure about the motherboard i could save a good 60 quid if i get a Asus P5K. The thing is that in a future i might want to go crossfire and people seem to agree that x38 is better than p35.


The cpu:
I was thinking about using a old Pentium 4 3.0 a work mate has given to me. But it does not eve have a heatsink and fan. It might be a better idea to buy a cheap Core2Duo. Learn to overclock here and then overclock it to death. Which one should i get?


Next year i will upgrade, depending on my needs and my wallet:

-Quad Core Penryn
-2 GB more of geil
-9800GTX?
-Windows vista if it is fixed

I will press the order button tomorrow at 22:00. Any advice is welcome!!!

That PSU is overkill. Even with a pair of high performance GPUs in the future you won't need that much power. The Corsair HX 620 is a better PSU in general and for the money.

You could get an E2180 and overclock that now very well.

He speaks the truth :) Unless planning to go dual graphics cards & or 5+ HDs, etc you won't need more than 500W. Remember, newer technology consumes less or the same & not more.

IMO spend what you can now (on current & proven components, e.g. P35) & save the rest maybe for an upgrade in the near future ;)

EDIT: X38 is only better feature-wise & mobos are currently overpriced

Not too sure thats exactly how it goes, look back 10 years and you'll find some pretty low power consuming things. Ofcourse newer stuff is more efficient, but still uses more electricity.

But yeh, as stated the 620w would be more than adequate for future crossfire upgrades, and is a nicer colour :p

I think i am going to stick with the P5E. I know it is the "poor mans maximus formula" , but it is a high end board after all. It would not be fair to compare it with a standard P35 board and it is not much more expensive than a "deluxe" P35 board. The 1600 FSB, two x16 PCI-E lanes and better management of 4 memory modules makes it a good choice in my opinion. (and lets be honest, it looks much more sexy than a Asus P5K :p)

As i said i have played just a few PC games. I am new to this word. I have lots of games to play, i could not care less about Crysis. :D So i think it is better idea to invest on a more future proof mobo rather than a better GPU.

As you can see i have followed your recomendations about the PSU and the CPU. :)
 
Don't get the Geil ram for it as it is incompatiable. i found that out the hard way. I thought i could carry my Geil Ultra kit over to this rig, how wrong i was. It simply will not work with the P5E. Nor will the Corsair XMS 2 stuff. Ram that works are the Crucial Ballistix, OCZ Reaper, Corsair Dominator, GSkill PC2 8500, Cellshock PC2 8500+1100. If you are set on the P5E then check out the thread on the XS forums. I learnt a lot from there, including what ram actually works with it.
