Hi All,

My mates 8800GTX seems to have died, not completely but I suspect its on its way out.

Basically, when booting the bios screen has all sorts of funny glitches where it should be just plain black which continues until it boots. Once on the desktop it looks ok, but runs as though the video drivers arent installed, i.e. if you move a window it redraws it every second etc, also device manager reports the device has stopped working. So my questions are as follows:

1) Does eveyone agree that the card is on its last legs?

2) What would be the recommendation for a replacement card, at least of similar spec performance wise?

Thanks in advance.

Have you got another gfx card to use to make sure its not the pci-e slot causing issues?

do you have another dvi cable that you can try?

For performance that matches a 8800GTX, without your budget i would say either a 5770 or a 4850/4870 second hand.

Thanks for your answer.

Am borrowing another card later this week to try.

Regarding the cable, afaik it uses a standard vga cable with a DVI converter although im not sure about this being the problem. Windows shows that the "device has stopped working" etc and redraws any window everytime you move it, i.e. the same behaviour as when there are no video card drivers installed

As far as budget is concerned, its very small but maybe could stretch to a 5770

Thanks.
