Sorry for yet another is my psu good enough question :o

I am in the process of upgrading my pc from the following
ga-m59sli-s5
8800gts 512
6gb ddr2
Tagan TG900-U95 900W (Used to sli 7900gtx's)

I bought a hd5850 first and after installing it to test in the current system it wont boot just get clicking as if the card isn't getting enough power, all fans and all cables plugged in to board and vid card unplugged everything else.

I will be upgrading to the below when the parts arrive
GA-790FXTA-UD5
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955
OCZ Obsidian 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 Dual Channel

Just wanted to check if anyone is currently using the tg900-u95 with a hd 5850 or whether I need to look at changing the psu as well, it is 3-4years old now.

The psu supports 20A on each of the 4 12v rails but can allegedly combine the rails to supply 72A to 1 rail if needed.

I realise the only way to know definitely will be to try it when the rest of the parts arrive just a bit worried it wouldn't work with the current mobo for testing.

Hi mate,

The 5850 is by no means a monster power consumer, I recieved mine and fitted it tonight running on a coolermaster 460watt psu with 2x18a 12v rails so your psu should be up to spec even taking into account its age.

The 7900gtx runs with a 6pin per card and the 5850 takes 2x6pin so happy days.

btw for some reasurance take a look at the coolermaster psu calculator

edit: just missed that your card isn't working the best advice I can give is to check the motherboard vendors website to see if there are any known issues or bios updates. next up strip it right back to just your primary disk, cpu, ram and graphics and see how you get on.

good luck.

Thanks for that I had looked at the psu calc on cooler master to try to work out if the rails had degraded to much.

I will wait for the rest of the parts to arrive, new mobo, cpu & ram hopefully I wont have to replace the psu but won't mind to much as I like the look of the modular cooler masters and may end up getting one of those anyway.
