Yet another JB thread, going from 3GS running 3.1.2 to?

Sorry for posting yet another JB thread but after lots of searching and reading I'm now more confused than ever.

Currently got a 3GS running 3.1.2 (7D11) that was jailbroken for me many moons ago, it all works fine but I fancy moving to 4.x so the question is can I do this and retain a jailbroken phone?

Either moving directly to 4.1 and jail breaking it or somehow updating to 4.0.1 if required.

Appreciate any help given, lots of info all other the internet but having someone here confirm I'd consider a lot more reliable.

As long as you don't need to keep an ultrasn0w unlock, you can update to 4.1 using the official itunes method and then jailbreak using either limera1n or greenpois0n.
