Yet another new build to check!

Sorry, you lot must get really fed up constantly checking everyone's specs! :)

I've not built a PC since nearly ten years ago which was one of the first Athlons. Since then I've had a couple of pre-built but the latest of these isn't really cutting it any more.

I like my racing sims so I'm looking for something to cope with iRacing, LFS, GTR2 etc plus I play the odd FPS such as COD4. Here is the spec I'm thinking of:

*edit* Revised spec:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (102-B50902-00-AT) £376.04
Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £247.24
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM £228.8
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU) £155.24
Corsair 6GB DDR3 XMS3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz (3x2GB) Triple Channel DDR3 (TR3X6G1333C9) £141.44
Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU £97.74
Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103UJ) £79.34
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 (Socket LGA1366) £57.49
Samsung SH-S223F/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.09
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) £6.89

Total: 1421.27

I'm thinking of using Vista x64 and I already have a 24" monitor running at 1920x1200. I'll be using on-board sound. I already have speakers, keyboard and mouse.

Have I missed anything?

So what are your thoughts then chaps? Is the PSU good enough should I want to add another GPU later?

I'm fairly sure I'll be able to put this lot together but if anyone has any advice or tips or links to any good guides they would be appreciated. Things have moved on some way since I last did a build so I've never worked with a modular PSU or had to apply thermal compound (no idea what I'm doing with this )

Any help or comments will be appreciated.

Oh yeah, how loyal is loyal when trying to get free delivery?

Cheers,

Chris

What you have there will work fine, some tweaking (if it were me) would be to substitute the Rampage with a P6T deluxe (does everything you want) and put more money towards a better quality PSU. Not that OCZ is particularly bad, and the quoted power output is fine, but pay for the best build quality and you won't regret it. I've always used Enermax but OcUK stopped selling them, however Corsair, BeQuiet, Zalman make quality PSUs (that's not a complete list). Again, the Akasa Nero will work fine (I have one) but there are better HSFs like the Noctua.

Go with a 6gb kit instead of 2 3gb kits, performs better and gives you room for improvement later.

If you're spending that much i would upgrade the cooler to a true with something like a noctua fan.

Rest looks good, if it was me i would have a 320gb hd for os and games and a 1tb for storing media, music, films etc.

re

i would get a 1000w psu just incase you may want to go crossfire in the future and forget about the rampage..get the asus p6t instead...i have had both boards...for the price your better with the p6t its not a lot different to the rampage to be honest and you can achieve more or less the same results when overclocked. 24 inch monitor runs resolution 1920*1200.....viewsonic 22inch 1920*1080 full HD 1080p..a lot less cheaper that a 24...take a look...

overclockers are out of stock of these monitors but you can get them at **azon :-)

Thanks for the rapid response guys.

I've taken your advice and removed the Rampage in favour of the P6T.

thevet, you say I should go for a 1000w psu. As a compromise (trying to keep to a budget of £1500), I've changed to a Corsair 750w which is half the price of the 1000w. If I do go Crossfire later I'd perhaps upgrade the PSU at the same time although I would have thought 750w would be fine?

Again, I've taken your advice on the cooler and swapped it for a Noctua.

Mpj88 I have an existing 250gb Sata, so I'll probably use that as an OS drive as per your suggestion.

Thanks again for the quick feedback chaps. Does this look ok now?

A decent 750W with good 12V amperage should be more than enough for most setups. It's a myth that you need uber 1000W PSUs. The corsair 750 is a cracking PSU from what I've heard.
