Hi all

Right I am a newbie here and this will be my first ever PC build. In the past I have had people build me PCs to their recommendations, and now my current PC is about 6 years old and starting to play up. So I thought I would take a leap into the dark side and have a go myself !!!

Any advice is much apprecaited, and if there is anyhting I have missed please let me know.:D

Samsung spinpoit T166 HD501LJ
Crucial Ballistix 2gb kit 12864AA804
Asus en8800GT
Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P
Antec trupower trio TP650
Antec P182 case
Core 2 quad Q6600 G0

Thank you for reading this request and Happy New Year

hi mate and welcoem to the forums

that build looks good

some things i would change

forget the ballistix ram and get the geil 2 gb set
drop the antec truepower and get a corsair hx 520

and personally id go for a western digital HDD

lokks like youve been reading custom pc mag as that is nearly all their reccomended stuff

Thanks Danman

I have been reading several mags and visting many forums, listening/reading to other peoples builds/recommendations. I must admit that this site is one of the best I have seen and there also seems to be a lot of advice being given.

May I ask why you make those recommendations?

first the PSU

it is the most highly reccomended PSU on these forums, i have one and they are awesome and quiet. It is also modular, whereas the one you specced isnt

The RAM you can push the Q6600 to 3.6Ghz with the geil stuff and it is much cheaper than the the crucial(which is still good ram)

The HDD the samsung is a great drive, personally i just preffer Western Digital

Danman

Ok taking your advice on board (thank you)

How do you mean modular re PSU??
geil v crucial, how good is geil RMA v crucials as this was a deciding factor?
HDD I always prefered Seagate myself, I was going along with CustomPC on this one, and are seagate & western pretty much the same??? and what made you choose the HDD you have, size, read/write, warranty??

modular means the cables all unplug from the PSU itself

meaning you only have to plug in the ones you need, excellent for cable management

not sure on the RMA of geil

My model is in my sig Western digital 500 gig AAKS

Great I like a tidy PC and you have changed my mind with that one (THX) I did notice that many people use corsair PSUs whilst looking at the "Case" forum.
Hmm you have thrown a spanner in the HDD dept !!! Looks like I will need to think about this one and do some homework.
One final question re RAM, which geil kit do you recommend?
Once again thank you Danman2K, your a gentleman !!!

Does anyone else wish to enter any comments/suggestions???

For the price there simply amazing, mine will do 1000Mhz with ease :D
Personally I'd get the Tuniq Tower over the freezer, but its up to you in the end.

I notice that both of you have 4gb in your PCs, what OS are you running? as I thought Windows only recognises 3.5gb max?

Vista 64 m8.
With the price of DDR2 atm and how cheep the GeIL is, there's no reason not to get 4GB really.
Not to mention Vista is a total ram hog.

Vista eats memory for breakfast.
I'm using 1Gb atm, and that just typing this.
Throw a memory heavy game on top of that with only 2Gb and you'll have disk swapping which will cause games to lag horribly.

Ok now I understand, but why use Vista 64 as oppose to XP Pro that I take is not RAM hungry?? is it just for the 64bit as oppose to 32 bit? and perhaps I should throw more memory as you say it is cheap enough at the moment.

If your going with the GeIL, 4 x 1Gb.
The reason for Vista 64 is because the 32bit operating systems such as XP and Vista 32 can only address 3Gb of ram.

HI Guys

Update on my build; I have just bought an Acer 22 inch monitor. Would it be worthwhile changing the graphics card that I have chosen to something better???
